The weather is very cold now. This morning there was frost on the car windows.
I rode my scooter to school. By the time I got to school, my fingers were cold.
The school office is warm. I feel warm, but my fingers are still cold.
I like wintertime, but I don’t like cold fingers.
How do you keep your fingers warm during the winter?

During August almost everyone in Japan goes traveling. Most people take a trip to visit their family home. While they are there, it is common to pay respects at their relatives gravesites.
Often people will take trips to cool locations because it is so hot. Some people go traveling outside of Japan as well.
Of course, Japanese people like to give souvenir items to people. Cookies are a very easy souvenir item, so we often get cookies. This year I have a lot of cookies. I don’t know if I can eat all of them.
Did you travel during August? Where did you go? Will you help me eat my cookies?

We have two cars. One car is very small. The other car is medium-sized.
The bigger car is very comfortable. The seats are nice, the engine runs smoothly, and the heater is very warm. The smaller car is noisy and cold.
I drive the small car more often. It may seem strange, but there are many narrow streets around here. When driving on narrow streets, the small car is much safer and more convenient.
When I drive on the freeway, I take the comfortable car.
Which car would you drive?

When I was young we often went to the ocean to play. On the Pacific Coast the wind is very strong. One of our favorite activities was flying kites. We really liked to see how high we could fly the kites.
Many times, we would use an entire ball of string and still wanted to go higher. We would tie a second ball of string on and send the kite higher. Sometimes we would get three or four balls of string! The kites must have been more than a kilometer away.
I remember one time when our string broke. Because the kite was so far up, it flew a long way before it came down. We spent a long time finding the kite.
Do you like playing at the beach? Do you like flying kites?

Sleeping on my futon, under a down comforter, I was very warm this morning. When I went outside it was very, very cold. I found frost on the car windows. Before I could go to work, I had to scrape all the ice off the car windows.
When I got in the car my hands were numb.
I wonder if it will snow here. Recently there was snow in a neighboring town.
I like snow, but it can be dangerous.
Do you like snow? How do you stay warm in the winter?

Today is Halloween. It is not a traditional holiday in Japan, but it is slowly becoming popular.
On Halloween, Canadians and Americans like to carve a face in a pumpkin. We put a candle inside and call it a jack-o-lantern. Usually we put it in front of our house as a decoration.
I found pumpkins in Japan. I made jack-o-lanterns from the pumpkins, but there was a problem. If I put them outside, they rotted very fast. Canada and most of America are very cold at the end of October. Japan is very warm.
Where do you live? Is it cold enough to put a jack-o-lantern outside?

We had some business at City Hall today. Just by chance there was an international festival at the same time.
We visited the festival and ate some food. There was good food from Brazil, The Philippines, Korea, Tanzania and other countries. I really liked the Bolivian food.
Some of our friends were there as well. It was good to see them.
Do you enjoy foreign food? What is your favorite kind?

Monday was a holiday. It was also close to a full moon. Our friends recently remodeled their home. They decided to invite us to a moon viewing party at their home.
Everyone brought lots of good food. We drank some special beer.
When the party started, the sky was overcast so we couldn’t see the moon. After we ate dinner and prepared the garden, the sky cleared up. We had a beautiful view of the bright moon.
We made Japanese tea in the garden and ate sweets. A perfect end to the long weekend.

I work at elementary schools. Every day I get a break for 45 minutes. The school office is noisy, so during my break I want to go someplace else. I want to go someplace quiet, but there is no place close enough. Usually I sit in the noisy office and work instead of taking my break.
Recently I moved. I was living in an apartment in another town. My new home is a small house very close to my schools. Actually, it is only about two minutes from my Friday school.
Today, during my break, I went home and sat in my own living room. It was very quiet and peaceful. Rays of sunshine were coming in through the curtains. It was a short break, but it felt very nice.
Do you live far from work? Do you get many breaks? What do you like to do on your breaks?

Fall weather has come to my town. The air is getting cold. People are wearing long sleeves and jackets.
When Fall comes, soon the leaves will start to change colors. After that they will fall from the trees.
During my childhood we would collect leaves and make rubbings. We put thin paper over the leaves and rubbed the paper with charcoal. Sometimes we would use crayons or the side of a pencil tip.
Rubbings made from leaves are very beautiful and fascinating. I like the natural designs.
Sometimes we made rubbings on the kitchen floor. The flooring design was interesting, but it wasn’t natural.
Have you ever made rubbings? Did you use leaves? Did you use something else?
