Weather Patterns

August 3, 2010

Yesterday afternoon the weather got very, very hot and humid. When I walked down the hall at school, my head hurt.

Today, I am sitting in an air conditioned office and looking out the window at blue sky and white, fluffy clouds.

There is a breeze blowing through the trees in the schoolyard.

This school is much more peaceful than the school yesterday.

How is the weather there?

Rainy Drive

July 29, 2010

Today I work at a school near a train station. After work I will meet a friend near another train station. I live near a train station.

This morning I planned to ride the train to work.

When I left my house it was pouring rain. The rain was so hard I didn’t want to walk to the garbage cans. I definitely didn’t want to walk to the train station.

Today I drove my car.

Was it raining where you are?

Swimming at School

July 27, 2010

It is summer vacation now. The students have no classes; however, all the teachers have to come to work.

Some of the students come to school in the morning to swim for two hours.

This morning I ran to the train and got sweaty. Then I rode my bike from the station to the school and got more sweaty. The other teachers invited me to swim with the students.

We had a good time. The water was cool and refreshing. I got a little sunburned.

Hard Work

July 20, 2010

Today the teachers all worked very hard. They were repairing and cleaning the school. It is very hot and humid, so they are all very tired now.

While they were getting dirty and sore, I was doing deskwork in the office. The air conditioner was turned on, so I was very comfortable. I feel very lazy.

Weather Report

May 25, 2010

Many people studying English learn about weather. Usually they learn words like: sunny, cloudy, rainy, and snowy. We have other special words for weather as well:

  • Scattered showers – light rain in some locations, but not everywhere
  • Overcast – no blue sky visible, but the cloud layer might be thin
  • Partly sunny – mostly cloudy with some sunshine
  • Partly cloudy – mostly sunny with some clouds

What is the weather like where you are?

Hand-Washed Car

March 17, 2010

Today I had my car washed. I don’t like using machines to wash cars. Sometimes the machines scratch the cars. So, I asked them to wash the car by hand. It is more expensive to get the car hand-washed, but it is very pretty now.

Do you wash your own car? Do you wash it by hand or with a machine?

In America we have a superstition about washing cars. We think that washing the car will make it rain. I hope the weather doesn’t change.

Spring Flu

March 15, 2010

Today, 19 children are out sick. Two of them have the Flu. The weather is very cold and rainy. It seems strange for mid-March.

I don’t feel very well either. My stomach hurts and I have diarrhea. I hope I don’t catch the Flu. Hopefully I can take a nap soon.

Are you healthy?

Weather Report

February 10, 2010

Yesterday, I drove to work. Normally on Tuesday’s I ride the train and then ride a bike to the school. It is faster to go by train, than to go by car.

When I checked the weather report, it said there was a 90% chance of rain. I drove by car to stay dry. The weather was cloudy in the morning, but it turned Sunny in the afternoon. I can’t trust the weather report.

Today I rode the train.

Groundhog’s Day

February 3, 2010

In America we celebrate Groundhog’s Day in early February. It is a very strange celebration. If the groundhog comes out of his hole and sees his shadow, then we expect to have 6 more weeks of winter weather. If the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, we expect Spring will come soon.

Of course, there is no connection to the weather, but everyone likes this event because it is silly and fun.

A groundhog is a small animal that lives in a hole under the ground.

Peaceful Breakfast

February 1, 2010

Today is the first of February. I went to Sushi Kyu this morning. On the first day of each month they serve a special meal with porridge. They start serving at 5AM and stop serving when the food runs out.

After I moved to Ise, I planned to go every month. I wanted to try every type. Unfortunately, after my accident in August, it has been difficult to go. This month, I bought a car, so today I drove to Sushi Kyu.

The porridge was very good. It included a fish, egg, ginger, and seaweed. There were lots of pickles and a Japanese plum, too.

Outside the window, I could see the river. The water level is low. The water is very, very clear. Some leaves were floating on the surface.

I have eaten the special porridge for February, June, July, August, and November. This year, I hope to eat it in March, April, May, September, October, December, and January.
