Children’s Day

May 6, 2011

Yesterday was Children’s Day in Japan. It is a holiday for children, but mostly we consider it a holiday for boys. It is traditional to fly ‘carp kites’ over homes that have male children.

Carp kites look like wind socks. They are decorated like Japanese carp. When I was a small boy, I had a carp kite.

Someday I hope to have a son. I will buy him a carp kite and fly it proudly.

Strange Schedule

May 2, 2011

Often I can take vacation during Golden Week, but this year I can’t. Friday, April 29th was a holiday. Tuesday, May 3rd through Thursday, May 5th are holidays, too.

On Monday, May 2nd and Friday, May 6th I have to teach many classes. This makes a strange schedule: 3 days off, work 1 day, 3 days off, work 1 day, 2 days off, and back to normal.

Do you work during Golden Week?

Equinox

September 22, 2010

Tomorrow is a holiday in Japan. In English we call it the Autumnal Equinox. We consider it the first day of Autumn, but it is not a holiday in America.

My wife wants me to spend the day cleaning my library at home. It is messy right now.

Also, she wants me to visit a friend of hers. I have never met her friend so I’m a little nervous. In Japan when we meet a new person we are supposed to use special polite language. I am afraid I will forget and use normal language. I hope he doesn’t think I am rude. I want to leave a good impression.

Do you have trouble remembering when to use polite language?
