Flying Kites

When I was young we often went to the ocean to play. On the Pacific Coast the wind is very strong. One of our favorite activities was flying kites. We really liked to see how high we could fly the kites.

Many times, we would use an entire ball of string and still wanted to go higher. We would tie a second ball of string on and send the kite higher. Sometimes we would get three or four balls of string! The kites must have been more than a kilometer away.

I remember one time when our string broke. Because the kite was so far up, it flew a long way before it came down. We spent a long time finding the kite.

Summer Swimming

My family moved to Redmond when I was three years old. Our neighborhood had a swimming pool. Every summer the pool was open for lessons, playing, and swim meets.

Just before my 4th birthday I joined swimming lessons. When I was a child, I would get up early every morning during the summer and walk or run to swimming lessons. After lessons I would come home, eat breakfast, and watch TV. As soon as all the lessons were done for the day, we would run back to the pool for play time.

We also swam in the local lakes a lot. Sometimes we would drive to the ocean and play at the beach. I really like swimming in the ocean.

Shopping at the Market

For more than a hundred years, there has been a public market in Seattle. It was created by farmers. They wanted a convenient place to sell fresh food to customers. The market is very successful because it is inexpensive, but also it is very fun and lively.

You can find fruits and vegetables, flowers, nuts and honey, fish and seafood, and handmade goods. Many shopkeepers are energetic and amusing.

Also, there are famous shops like the very first Starbuck’s Coffee shop. They usually have musicians in front of the shop and they sell fresh coffee inside. A lot of people who love Starbuck’s go there to have their picture taken and buy souvenir goods.

The view from the market is very beautiful. We can see the ocean and mountains and trees.
